  • Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics

No doubt the small efforts give a big outcome collectively. Similarly, prescribing a drug is a big outcome of all the efforts of curing or healing. The subject 'Pharmacology and Therapeutics' encircles all aspects of drugs. During the last 50 years, knowledge of drugs and their effects have become indispensable to those practicing the healing arts. Despite the best intentions of his/her subject knowledge, a Physician, a Surgeon or an Expert of any specialty achieves middling success without conscious regarding the scientific principles that underpin the optimal use of medicines. Because modern medicines are highly effective and seldom cause serious unwanted effects, their safety taken largely for granted by those who prescribe and administer them as well as by the patients for whom they are intended.

The Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics was founded by Dr. Muhammad Tariq Aftab in Jan 1995. He was the head of Department till 1998. The position was filled by Dr. Fareeda Islam till 1999 and then from 2003 till 2008. Prof. Syed Muhammad Shamim also chaired if from 1999 till 2003. However the department is again headed by Dr. Muhammad Tariq Aftab. It has eight teaching faculty members and seven non teaching members. All members are professionals, sincere and dedicated. They have insight in the subjects. It has a strong program for teaching and training of Pharmacology and Therapeutics. It is involved in research and has close liaison with other Universities, Institutes, Research Organization of the country and abroad.

The department is highly equipped for teaching and training of the subject to medical and dentistry undergraduates and for basic and clinical research. Its training program provide a comprehensive pharmacology knowledge base. After going through a well organized program a medical or dentistry student is available to execute a knowledge based practical approach to prescribe drugs in his/her practice and gain considerable expertise in designing a research for investigation of different aspects of drugs and therapeutics

The department has a high potential to meet the challenges and a strong vision for future, which includes establishment of Adverse Drug Reaction Monitoring Centre, Clinical Trail Designing and Monitoring Unit , Pharmacokinetic Research Centre and an Institute for Basic Research and Clinical Development of Drugs.

  • Department of Pathology & Mirobiology

Pathology is the systematic study of disease, their cause, symptoms and treatments. Broadly speaking this subjects deals with derangement of tissue structure and function in disease, related with clinical signs and symptoms.

The clinical pathological approach is of primary importance in clinical practice and need to be taught thoroughly. In third year, clinical teaching and ward rounds are introduced and this is the time when a medical student’s mind start recognizing and questioning about the mechanism and root cause of disease i.e. pathology. The curriculum of Pathology has been divided into General Pathology and Special Pathology. General Pathology accompanied with Microbiology and Parasitology is taught in third year.

General pathology deals with general reaction and response of a cell and tissue to abnormal stimuli causing disease. Microbiology is the study of micro organisms which are the most common cause of disease in developing countries. So are parasites. Study of organisms help to understands the mechanism of the diseases. Special pathology deals with specific reactions and changes seen in specific diseases. This help students in diagnosis and treatment of the patients. Special Pathology is taught in fourth year along with clinical subjects.

Basic principles are taught, supplemented by a practical work at undergraduate level. Audio visual aids are frequently used in teaching. Laboratory and museum have been developed extensively in teaching Pathology, Microbiology and Clinical Hematology. Two hundred specimens are available in museum, which facilitates better understanding of Pathology.

Besides, Pathological Lab is available in ASH, which helps the physicians and the surgeons.

    • To diagnose the disease

    • To follow the course of disease

    • To treat disease

  • Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology

Forensic medicine is the application of medical knowledge for the purpose of law both civil & criminal. As a doctor, a forensic man applies his medical knowledge to the knowledge of law, not only in solving crimes but also in imparting justice to the distressed. The subject has gained an added importance in current scenario due to escalating violence & terrorism. Medical jurisprudence in particular deals with the legal aspects of practice of medicine such as duties of the doctor towards patient and the state, medical ethics, medical negligence etc.

We at the department have developed a multi-pronged approach for imparting the knowledge of Forensic medicine and Toxicology to undergraduate medical students. We conduct regular theory lectures, practical classes and demonstrations mostly at the college premises. But to acquaint the students with the real life situations, we also conduct weekly posting to the casualty/emergency departments of Abbassi Shaheed Hospital as well as to the medico-legal mortuary sections of the hospital. We also arrange students visit to outdoor medico-legal exhumations, the Government Chemical Examiners laboratory, the city’s central position centre and so on.

The depart has a well equipped forensic laboratory with all auxiliary paraphernalia. The departmental library is well stocked with audio visual facilities. The Forensic & Toxicology museum is packed with a variety of relevant specimens. We have plans to develop our department in the Centre for Analytical Toxicology with chromatography & spectrophotometry facilities. With dedicated and experienced teachers pursuing post graduate qualification in the subject, the department is a model Forensic Medicine department.
